How the materials become a pattern
Khatam is built from bundles of slender rods, commonly combining wood, bone and metal. Thin cross-sections of the assembled bundle form repeating geometric veneers. Moarraq creates a picture or pattern from individually cut pieces; monabbat works the surface of wood through carving rather than added inlay.
Aineh kari uses cut mirror fragments to articulate an architectural surface. Gachbori is worked plaster. They belong here because interiors often bring these techniques together, not because they are forms of woodwork. Distinguishing material from motif makes comparisons much more useful.
Look beyond the decorated face
On a box or frame, inspect corners, edges, hinges and the fit of the lid. A well-composed pattern should make sense where surfaces meet. Check for lifted veneer, gaps, losses and coatings that obscure detail; the smallest repeated motif is not the only measure of workmanship.
Wood responds to changes in humidity, and composite objects bring materials with different responses together. Keep them away from damp surfaces, direct heat and prolonged sunlight. Do not soak an inlaid object or apply oil or polish without identifying its existing finish.
