Engraving, chasing, enamel or inlay?
These terms describe different ways of working a surface, not interchangeable styles. Engraving cuts into metal; chasing shapes it with tools struck from the front. Repoussé raises relief from the reverse. A single vessel can combine several operations, so look at both its form and its decoration.
Mina kari adds a fired vitreous enamel surface, while silver, gold and turquoise inlay introduce another material into or onto a metal ground. A blue surface is not automatically enamel, and a silver-coloured surface is not proof of solid silver. Ask how the piece was made and what each visible material actually is.
What to examine before collecting metalwork
Study the rim, base, joins and undecorated areas as closely as the main motif. These reveal how the object was formed and assembled. In engraved work, examine the control of the lines, changes in depth and the relationship between the pattern and the vessel's curve; handmade does not simply mean uneven.
Ask for dimensions, material identification, condition photographs and any documented history. Repairs, replaced components, wear and later polishing can all affect how a work should be understood. A motif associated with the Safavid or Qajar periods does not, on its own, date the object to either period.

Common questions
- Is qalamzani the same as mina kari?
- No. Qalamzani refers to tool-work such as chasing and engraving on metal. Mina kari is enamel work involving a glass-like coating fired onto a prepared surface. They can appear together, but require different processes.
- Should antique Persian metalwork be polished?
- Not automatically. Abrasive polishing can remove patina, gilding and fine detail. Identify the metal, surface finish and condition first, and seek specialist advice for antiques, enamel or inlay.
