Painting, writing and illumination
Persian miniature painting is closely connected with manuscript culture, although paintings also appear as separate album leaves and later independent works. Calligraphy makes writing the principal visual form. Tazhib, or illumination, supplies ornamental patterns and gilded decoration around or alongside text and images.
Nastaliq is a script, not a generic label for all Persian calligraphy. Qajar portraiture and coffeehouse painting have different formats and contexts from manuscript painting. Compare the subject, support, intended use and inscription before placing a work in a tradition.

Margins, paper, mounting and the reverse can be as informative as the central image. An album page may combine material from different dates, and an attractive border is not proof that it was made with the painting. Ask whether a work is an original painting, a later copy, a print or a reproduction.
For works on paper, condition questions include fading, staining, tears, retouching and acidic mounts. Signatures and attributed names need evidence rather than assumption. Keep display light low and avoid direct sunlight; consult a paper conservator before attempting to clean or flatten a valuable sheet.

- No. Many have a manuscript context, but others were made as independent paintings or album leaves. The sheet's structure, text, margins and documented history help establish its original setting.
