Understand the structure before the pattern
A pile carpet has knots attached to a foundation of warp and weft. A kilim is a flatweave without knotted pile; gabbeh generally refers to a pile weaving associated with bold, often relatively simple designs. These are structural and stylistic distinctions, not a hierarchy of artistic value.
Termeh is a patterned woven cloth, zari uses metallic threads in brocade, and ghalamkar applies designs through printing, traditionally using carved blocks. A paisley motif can appear on several kinds of textile, so its presence does not identify the technique or place of manufacture.
A collector's condition checklist
For carpets, compare the front and reverse and inspect fringes, side edges, wear and repairs. Fringe can be part of the foundation or added later. Knot density can describe structure, but does not establish age, authenticity or beauty by itself; composition, colour, material and condition matter too.
For finer cloth, ask about fibre, dimensions, fading, stains and previous repairs. Support textiles rather than hanging them by a fragile edge. Avoid direct sunlight and untested cleaning products, and have valuable or delicate pieces assessed before washing or restoration.

Common questions
- Does a high knot count guarantee a better Persian carpet?
- No. Knot count is only one structural characteristic. Design, wool or silk quality, handling, condition and documented origin all matter, and some excellent tribal weavings deliberately use a coarser structure.
- Is termeh a type of carpet?
- No. Termeh is a patterned woven textile, often associated with Yazd. It differs from a knotted pile carpet in both construction and customary use.
